Good day for Owls

It turned out to be a great day for seeing owls on Antelope Island. We saw our first burrowing owls. They are so small! You'd think they were rocks until you catch them moving. We saw a family of 3 and another just siiting on top of a rock. The great horned owl was out at Garr Ranch as well.

Winding up the "Summer of 40" with Green Day

It began May 18 with friends at the Bayou, sweet potato fries,  2 cakes ("Mission Accomplished" & Hello Kitty). June brought a week in a treehouse in Belize with swimming under a rainforest waterfall. I spent July wandering the mountains every weekend and briefly considered buying a cabin. I never even mowed the lawn once. August brought camping in Montana, Yellowstone and we wrapped up the big Cory-turns-40 summer festivities with Green Day..."I'm one of those melodramatic fools". BEST SUMMER EVER! Thanks, Jess. You throw one hell of a party!

Yellowstone Getaway

We spent a couple of days camping on Cabin Creek near Yellowstone National Park. The wildlife and scenery is beyond description. From the Osprey floating above and nesting to the big horn sheep on Mt. Washburn to the little pica on Cabin Creek, it was amazing.

Woke up wanting to see a Western Tanager

We took the annual trip to the Park City Arts Festival Friday night. The one piece I was tempted to buy was a great photo of a Western Tanager. I knew that Tanagers hung out by the trail head to Donut Falls, so we got up early this morning and set out to photograph a Tanager. The place was swarming with broad-tail hummingbirds and I caught a fast glimpse of a WT, but no photo opportunity. A Swainson's thrush and a yellow warbler sat nicely for shots, but no WTs. Then on the road out suddenly we spotted a flash of yellow, black and vermillion in the brush by the road. We ended up getting a great show from 3 Western Tanagers. I think they might be my favorite local bird... maybe a tie with the lazuli bunting.

Wasatch Wildflowers

Our friends showed us a secret trail (I'm sworn to secrecy) away from the crowds and mountain bikers. We had the meadows to ourselves on the best weekend for wildflowers.

Oh great, Marmots

The snow is finally off Albion basin. We beat the wildflower festival crowds and went up last weekend. At our favorite bird spot a family of yellow bellied marmots were just emerging. We also spotted a new bird for us - the Clarkes Nutcracker.

Who Doesn't Love a Pica?

The pica at Solitude/Brighton were active and very cute today. The colony seems to be thriving. A doe and her two fawn even wandered by.
