Picas Anyone?

I spent this morning above Silver Lake (Brighton) sitting in a talus field watching for picas. These small relatives of rabbits only live in specific altitudes and temperatures and are endangered by global warming. The Silver Lake colony seemed very lively today. I counted at least 5 distinct individuals. They were busy gathering greens to dry in caches for winter. A very fat yellow-bellied marmot  was sunning himself on the rocks as well.

We saw a new bird (well, new to us) today. Our very first red crossbill. Stunningly red with black wings and, of course, a crossed bill. Other birds included 4-5 red tailed hawks, a kestral, a golden eagle who announced himself with a piercing shriek (froze me in my steps), lots of yellow-rumped warblers, mountain chickadees, juncos and a red breasted nuthatch. Oh, and 1 moose. A good wildlife day in Utah's mountains.

Busy crew

I came back from a meeting to find the media and web crew hard at work. I think they are playing with canned air. State employees at their productive best.

I heart Master Muffler

The car catalytic converter calamity concluded contentedly (a 6 C sentence!). The good guys at Master Muffler on 6700 South State Street in Salt Lake City had the partially cut exhaust pipe patched and welded within 15 minutes, and the best part is they did the work for FREE. I'm amazed that that kind of service still exists. A muffler shop in Utah restores my faith in America. Thanks MM guys!

Not in MY America

No photo this time. Just my rage. Apparently on Friday while I worked as a good public servant, someone crawled under my car at the park-and- ride lot and tried to saw off my catalytic converter. The things apparently go for $150 bucks at the scrap yard. I try to be responsible and take public transit. My reward is people chopping up my car. Let's hope crap like this is only a memory in Barack Obama's America!

Hummis and Tabuli Getting Ready to Migrate

This morning Jess caught pics of the black-chinned hummingbirds who've taken up residence in our yard. We named the male Hummis. He's on his branch every morning and evening and chases any other male hummingbirds away from HIS feeder. He seems to be OK with the female (we call her Tabuli) taking from the feeder. Migration will start in a few days. I think I'll miss the little pair.

U of U Rabbit

I often encounter this bunny in the morning as I walk to my office on the university of Utah campus. Today he let me get close enough for a picture. Yesterday I saw a pair of hawks - probably sharp shinned hawks. I also occasionally see deer on campus.

Flying Monkey

"Every time I throw the monkey, he loses a hand"

I'm not sure that I really need to add any commentary.

Monochromatic Cat

Does the floor match Fox, or Fox match the floor? It seems that we picked all the basement renovation colors based on our cats.

My 378 attempt to blog. But this one is so simple to do and with an iPhone, I might just post more than once this time around. Oh, and I stole my profile image from the awesome Guy Francis, illustrator extraordinaire - http://www.guyfrancis.com
